Lace up those sneakers, pour in your hydration sports drink mix and get ready to hit the course! Whether you participate in a Spartan Race, Tough Mudder, Battle Frog or other OCR, obstacle courses have become one of the biggest trends to staying fit in a fun way. With many people actively seeking healthier lifestyles in today’s society, all sorts of obstacle courses are run (no pun intended) across the world. Whether it’s the Tough Mudder, Spartan Race or something new to the industry this year, very little gear is needed in comparison to other outdoor races. However, the few items that you do need are incredibly important. The following items can truly play a huge part in your success of the obstacle race, while also decreasing your risk of injury while enhancing your body’s recovering period. Needless to say, they should not be overlooked.
Hydration is Key
We might as well start this list off with the most important element of all – hydration. Completing an obstacle course race without proper hydration can be near impossible, or at the very least, an extremely daunting task. A lot of sports drinks have tons of sugar in them, which won’t give you the kind of hydration you need to compete to your fullest. Instead, use a sports drink mix such as the HDX Hydration Mix to get maximum results and to keep your body energized throughout the race. HDX Hydration mix has all the Vitamin B6 and B12 you need for sustained endurance. It also has fast and slow acting carbohydrates, which will keep you up to pace throughout the entire obstacle course. So, add the sports drink mix into your hydration pack or water bottles, which is also a must have item for these kind of activities.
Quality Running Shoes with Superior Traction and Draining
Unfortunately, just any old pair of running shoes won’t do justice when competing in an obstacle course race. You need something that is going to be able to keep up with the pace of the race, terrain and obstacles. Just like a sugary drink doesn’t do justice for your hydration, average running shoes won’t either. Instead, you need a pair of shoes that can handle the different elements of obstacle course running, from the rocky terrain to the mud, from the climbing walls to the ponds. Look for all-terrain running shoes that have been designed specifically for obstacle courses. They should have optimal traction, which will be excellent for gripping onto ropes and walls, and should also be breathable to let the sweat, mud and water drain throughout the race.
Just like the hydration and running shoes, just any regular socks won’t do when it comes to competing in an obstacle race. There is something truly incredible about compression socks, and we understand that sounds absolutely crazy because after all, they’re socks. But don’t underestimate the power of them. Compression socks will decrease muscle soreness that is inevitable after participating in an obstacle race, and they will also speed up your recovery process. You may want to purchase calf-length compression socks specifically for obstacle courses, since you’ll be crawling in all kinds of dirt, gravel and mud. You’ll also be thankful to have them when you’re rope climbing.
There’s always the option of also wearing gloves to help you get through the different terrains and obstacles within these kinds of racing, but the three items mentioned are definitely musts. You never want to compete without proper sports gear, and more importantly, proper hydration. It’s the HDX Hydration sports drink mix that is truly going to get you through that rigorous race.
